Cleaning and Dental Exam Expectations

Regular visits give us the opportunity to prevent tooth decay before it can start and catch oral issues early. Patient comfort is our top priority. At each stage, we’ll make sure your child gets clear, worry-free care.

We start with a visual assessment of the teeth and gums. X-rays may be provided for children around age 3 or older. The teeth are thoroughly cleaned to remove any plaque buildup and tartar is removed with specialized tools. We polish the teeth for a smooth and shiny finish. Most children benefit from sealants and fluoride treatments to offer further protection against cavities before they hop out of the chair. We’ll take the time to discuss follow-up treatments plans if any extra care is necessary.

How Long Do Pediatric Teeth Cleanings and Exams Take?

Your child’s exam and checkup will generally take around 30-45 minutes to complete. We balance the time between carefully explaining procedures and efficient cleaning for patient comfort. If there’s a sign of tooth decay, we aim to provide same-day treatments, which could extend the length of the visit.

Does Insurance Cover Children’s Dental Exams?

If your insurance plan includes your child, most providers will cover routine dental cleanings and exams. Preventative sealants and fluoride treatments may also be included. We recommend taking advantage of both if available to lessen the chance of tooth decay. If insurance isn’t an option, we accept Medicaid, CHIP, and fee-for-service payments as well. Every kid deserves a healthy smile, and we’ll work with you to meet the budget for the care they need.

Digital X-Rays

For a close view at emerging teeth and tooth decay, digital x-rays are amazing tools. We’ll take x-rays only when necessary to make the best decisions for treatment or orthodontic recommendations. Our specialized machinery manages kid-friendly dosages so your child has minimal exposure while they get professional care.

X-rays are a viable tool to help detect initial stages caries, and help to utilize preventative measurements such as SDF and curodont.
